One region, very different roofs

The red-brick terraces that fill much of Manchester, Salford, Oldham, Bolton and Wigan were built in their thousands in the late nineteenth century, most of them roofed in Welsh slate. Many of those roofs are still original, and many now have loft rooms with roof windows on the rear slope.

Further out, inter-war and post-war semis in places such as Sale, Bramhall, Urmston and Whitefield more often have clay or concrete tiles. On the Pennine edge, in Saddleworth, Littleborough, Mossley and Ramsbottom, gritstone houses and heavy stone or slate roofs bring their own repair techniques.

Weather on the western side of the Pennines

Greater Manchester's reputation for rain is deserved, and the higher ground to the east and north gets more of it. Wind-driven rain finds its way past tired flashing, cracked mortar and worn roof window seals, which is why so many of the problems we see show up during autumn and winter storms rather than in steady drizzle.

A large share of Greater Manchester's homes are privately rented, particularly around the universities and in the inner suburbs.
