Electric VELUX® Window Conversions and Upgrades

High roof windows over stairwells, landings and vaulted ceilings are hard to reach and easy to leave open. Electric operation solves both problems. We fit new electric VELUX windows and convert many existing manual windows across Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

What electric operation gives you

  • Open and close windows with a wall switch or remote control, without a pole or ladder
  • A rain sensor that closes the window automatically when it starts to rain
  • Easy night-time ventilation in bedrooms and lofts
  • Electric blinds and shutters operated from the same control
  • Options to link with compatible smart home systems

Converting an existing window

Many existing VELUX windows can be converted to electric operation with a motor kit that fits to the window, without replacing the window itself. Whether your window is suitable depends on its type, size and age, which we can check from the code on the data plate along the top of the frame.

If your window isn't suitable for conversion, or is reaching the end of its life, replacing it with a new electric window is usually the better choice.

Power supply

Electric windows need a mains power supply near the window. In a loft conversion or new extension this is easy to plan in. In an existing room, a new supply may be needed, and any new mains wiring must be installed by a qualified electrician. Where there is no practical way to get power to the window, a solar-powered window is the alternative.

Where electric windows work best

  • Windows above stairwells, landings and atriums
  • Vaulted ceilings in extensions and barn conversions
  • Loft bedrooms where windows are out of easy reach
  • Homes where someone has limited mobility or reach

Frequently asked questions

Can my existing VELUX window be made electric?

Many can. Send us a photo of the code label on the top of the window frame and we will check whether a conversion kit is available for your window.

What happens in a power cut?

An electric window stays in the position it was in until power returns. It is worth closing windows if severe weather is forecast and a power cut is likely.

Should I choose electric or solar?

Electric is ideal where mains power is easy to reach. Solar avoids wiring altogether, which makes it simpler for existing rooms. We can talk you through both.
