Two towns and their villages

Widnes grew rapidly in the nineteenth century as a centre of the chemical industry, and its older streets have Victorian terraces with slate roofs, surrounded by inter-war, post-war and modern estates. Runcorn has an older town centre by the river, but much of it was built after it was designated a New Town in 1964, with planned estates linked by its busway.

The borough also includes rural villages: Hale, with its thatched cottages and lighthouse on the estuary; Daresbury, birthplace of Lewis Carroll and home to the Sci-Tech Daresbury campus; Moore; and Preston Brook, where the Bridgewater Canal meets the Trent and Mersey Canal. Sandymoor is a newer residential area to the east of Runcorn.
