Mill towns and Pennine villages

Oldham grew into one of the world's great cotton-spinning towns, and the streets of Victorian terraces built for mill workers still cover much of Oldham, Chadderton, Royton, Shaw and Failsworth, mostly with slate roofs. Inter-war, post-war and modern homes fill the suburbs.

To the east, Saddleworth was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. Its villages, including Uppermill, Delph, Dobcross, Diggle, Greenfield and Denshaw, are built in local gritstone, and many older buildings have heavy stone slate roofs. Several of these villages have conservation areas.

High ground and hard weather
