VELUX Windows
Solar-Powered VELUX® Window Conversions and Upgrades
Solar-powered roof windows give you remote-controlled opening and automatic closing in the rain, without any mains wiring. That makes them a tidy option for existing rooms. We fit new solar VELUX windows and convert suitable existing windows across Greater Manchester and Cheshire.
How solar roof windows work
A small solar panel on the window charges a battery, which powers the motor. The window is operated with a wireless remote or wall control, and a rain sensor closes it automatically when it starts to rain. Because the panel only needs daylight, not direct sunshine, solar windows work well in the North West's climate.
Why choose solar
- No new wiring, so no channelling into plaster or redecorating
- Ideal for existing loft rooms, landings and vaulted ceilings
- Suitable where there is no mains supply near the window
- Solar-powered blinds and shutters are also available
- Quick to fit, often in a single visit
Converting an existing window to solar
Many existing manual VELUX windows can be converted using a solar conversion kit, which adds the motor, battery, panel and control without replacing the window. Suitability depends on the window type, size and age. A photo of the code label along the top of the frame lets us check before we visit.
If the window is old, leaking or difficult to convert, a new solar-powered window can be fitted in the same opening.

Frequently asked questions
Do solar roof windows work in winter?
Yes. The panel charges in daylight rather than direct sun, and the battery stores enough charge for normal day-to-day use. Very long periods of low light can reduce how often the window can be operated.
How long do the batteries last?
Batteries do wear over time, as with any rechargeable battery. When the window starts to struggle to hold its charge, the battery can be replaced without replacing the window.
Can you add solar blinds as well?
Yes. Solar-powered blinds and roller shutters can be fitted to suitable windows and controlled with the same remote.
